The Most Powerless Powerful Man on Wall Street



My latest story is a profile of the embattled CEO of Citigroup, Vikram Pandit. The consummate "smartest guy in the room," he rose to the top of Wall Street just in time to watch it all collapse under his feet. One day he was a bone fide Master of the Universe, championed by Clinton treasurer and Citi board director Robert Rubin -- the next an object of populist scorn. It wasn't supposed to be this way:

When Pandit was born, an astrologer told his family that “whatever this boy touches will turn to gold.”
